Food/Environment

I love food. Spending a long Saturday in the kitchen chopping, stirring, and tasting; going to the farmers' market and meeting the people who grew my food; taking the family up to Green Bluff to pick apples and raspberries; reading cookbooks and tasting the recipes in my head.

I try to think mindfullyat least part of the time, and realizing I'm not being mindful is itself a form of mindful practiceabout the effects of my food choices and my other consumer behavior. Every time I pull out my debit card, I cast my vote for certain choices in public policy and my local economy. I also like food metaphors so these aren't all about real food.

My transportation choices emphasizing bicycling, transit, walking, and Amtrak over driving also reflect my environmental commitment. I write so much about those topics that they get their own tab here and an entire separate blog.
